Global overview of software developers and their profiles

In the world, more and more surveys are being created on the profiles of web developers to find out the job outlook and their expectations. Companies try to have an even larger sample with people who work in the ICT sector to know not only their levels of study or experience, but their profiles, tastes and fields where they work.

For this reason, a foreign company conducts a global survey each year to learn about the state of technology and developers. In February 2020, time before the start of the pandemic, they interviewed nearly 65,000 ICT workers, taking into account that the term “developers” refers to all people who develop technology and not just programmers.

Here we will know some important results to detail the characteristics and profiles of software engineers in the world.

Where are the engineers?

It is striking that the countries that form and employ the most people in this field are the United States, followed by Europe. In the case of Latin America there is more and more participation and that is why this area becomes an attraction for international companies.

Occupation areas

According to the survey, engineers are dedicated to back- end development first, followed by full- stack and third front-end. This means that web development is being maintained. Fourth and fifth place are occupied by desktop applications and mobile development, respectively.

Experience, a key point

Regarding work experience, most developers have between 5 and 14 years of programming experience, although there are developers with more than 50 years of experience. However, most of them wrote their first line of code between 14 and 15 years old, an indicator that shows that programmers start this professional path at a very young age.

And speaking of age, it can be deduced that those most interested in working in this sector are people between 26 and 31 years old.

Although companies are not interested in degrees, but in demonstrable experience, most developers have a training degree, close to (46.2%), secondly a master’s degree (22.8%) and thirdly people with studies university students without having obtained a degree (12.6%). An interesting fact is that 0.9% have never completed any type of formal education, but about 26% demonstrate their interest in training.

Remember these are just some of the features that define the landscape of developers in the world. It should be noted that the most attractive and common programming languages, occupied by JavaScript, were also highlighted in this survey, followed by HTML / CSS and SQL. Likewise, another of the details that attract attention is on topics that they want to learn and train the most, such as Python, JavaScript and Go.
